On December 12, 2018, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee passed after suffering from a heart attack early Tuesday morning at the age of 65. Mayor Ed Lee was the first Asian American to be elected to San Francisco’s highest post and served as mayor for seven years as the 43rd mayor for the city.

As the son of Chinese immigrant parents, he previously served as the managing attorney at the Asian Law Caucus, director of the Human Rights Commission, and City Administrator before being appointed as San Francisco’s mayor.

I’m so grateful for a public servant like Mayor Ed Lee. As the daughter of Korean immigrant parents, it’s incredibly meaningful to have an Asian American mayor representing one of the largest cities in California. By being elected citywide twice, he represented not just Asian Americans, but all San Franciscans. This is why I do this work. To ensure that we have a fair electoral system because it directly impacts the representation we get.

Going forward, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors President London Breed will serve as Acting Mayor until voters elect a new mayor on June 5, 2018.

FairVote California expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Mayor Ed Lee, his staff, and to the City of San Francisco during this difficult time.
